This year we will observe Yom Ha’Shoah, our day for remembering the victims of the Holocaust and those who assisted them by paying attention to the 75th anniversary of the monumental Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. So we will host on Sunday, April 8th, at 10:00 a.m. a special public performance by Wagner College students of an original play, In the Light of One Another: A meditation on resistance drawn from the testimony of survivors.
Twelve Wagner College students have learned the testimony of six Holocaust survivors from Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Among the songs they will sing in English, Hebrew and Yiddish are two original pieces created for this Wagner College Theater premier. Tali’s “Question Song” begins: Could you describe the night you fled? The day you wed? Or your childhood bed? As a child, would your family observe the Sabbath Light?…I need to know. “The inclusion of a question song, that condenses the forty questions we would each ask of survivors, will make this quite memorable,” remarks Rabbi John S. Schechter of Congregation B’nai Israel. The setting of the play is a Passover Seder, where students and survivors come together, as on the first night of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and before the Nazis set the entire ghetto on fire.
At the April 8th performance, the students from Congregation B’nai Israel will join the cast in the singing of the Partisan song (Zog nit Keinmol).
A generous grant from the Leonard B. Kahn Foundation has enabled the Wagner College Theater and Holocaust Center and Theater to expand our impact to Jewish organizations in New Jersey.
