“The 2nd Immigration Wave: Civil War and Westward Expansion” will be presented by Dr. Leora Isaacs, on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at 1:00 pm at Temple Sholom, 594 North Bridge Street, Bridgewater, NJ. The program is $5 and refreshments will be served.

The second wave of Jewish immigration to the United States (1820-1880) was the period in which German and Central European Jews spread out across America, gained substantial wealth and prominence and contributed enormously to the incredible expansion of the United States. It was also the time when Jewish religious practice took on a uniquely American character -- and anti-Semitism emerged in a very different form than in Europe -- and American Jews had to take sides in the Civil War. During this period the challenges of assimilation and retaining Jewish identity really crystalized. Join us to learn about the events and the larger than life characters -- and take part in a lively discussion about how we can trace the effects of this historical period to this day!

Leora Isaacs has more than four decades of experience as an educational practitioner, program developer and administrator, researcher and evaluator, and organizational and community consultant.
